Sadness Over the Unexpected Death of Flood Response Coordinator

Mike Holland, advisor to the SUNY Cortland Emergency Medical Squad and Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs at Cortland, passed away on October 29th. He was returning from a day of volunteering with a group of students, including members of SUNY Cortland's volunteer ambulance squad, to assist flood victims in Binghamton.

Mike had advised the Cortland EMS since 1984, and was named an honorary EMS member in 2008. Cortland's Student Government Association named EMS "the most outstanding club of the year" in 2010. He and other EMS leaders had helped coordinate Cortland's continuous flood relief effort in Binghamton, which began on September 10th, just days after the initial flooding began.

"Mike was upbeat and really positive," said Lindsie Alterman, a student leader from Binghamton University who volunteered with Mike on Saturday. "He took out an entire Saturday to lead our group, and spent his last day helping others. He really made a difference."

Mike will be sorely missed by his family, his students, and his community. A scholarship fund has been established in his name, in lieu of flowers and gifts to his family. Gifts may be sent to the Michael C. Holland, Sr. Scholarship, c/o Dryden Central School, P.O. Box 88, Dryden, NY 13053-0088.
